Its clear that if the Hornets are going to make a run at a boys tennis Eastern Athletic League championship, they will have to go through defending EAL champs Shasta to get there.
The two crosstown rivals met Monday, and although Enterprise notched victories in the top two singles, the Wolves were too strong, handing the Hornets a 7-2 home loss.
With a solid one-two singles punch in seniors Chris McGalliard and Zach McMahon, Enterprise (4-1) needed a couple of unexpected wins to fall into their lap to continue its perfect season and get an early leg up on Shasta (2-0).
But the Wolves flexed their muscles and swept the remaining seven matches to cruise to a win.
I didnt really know what to expect coming in but I know we cant take anything for granted out here, said first-year Shasta coach Todd Campbell said. Our depth and experience helped a lot and that was probably the difference.
Enterprise got a quick win to start the day when McGalliard knocked off Shastas Aneesh Chandramouli 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
The victory was big for the Hornets but more of an accomplishment for McGalliard, who couldnt finish his last match against Chandramouli in last years Northern Section singles semifinal because of an ankle injury after winning the first set.
This was a big way to set the tone for the season, McGalliard said. I just need to start attacking more.
At No. 2 singles, McMahon found himself in a hole after dropping the first set 6-7(3) to Shastas Jacob Zlotowski. But he regained his composure and finished strong with his forehand to put Zlotowski away 6-3, 6-4 in the final two sets.
After that, the Wolves didnt have much resistance through the middle singles matches. Shasta senior Gabe Gutierrez shutout Enterprises Trevor Woodward 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles while Wolves sophomore Chad Mallamo-Janski defeated Hornets Tim Li 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Shastas Alex Lawhon beat Enterprises Zach Selby 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
However, the Hornets had a chance to go into the doubles matches even at 3-apiece when Colton Ohler won the first set 6-1 No. 6 singles. But Ohler couldnt finish out the momentum and lost to Shastas Sundeep Kakarlapudi 6-4, 6-2 in the second and third sets.
We really needed that win and it was a close one, Campbell said. That was big for us to go into doubles at 4-2.
Meanwhile, Enterprise didnt go away without a fight. The Hornets took early leads in all three doubles matches and the possibility of a doubles sweep to take a win seemed plausible.
But the Wolves duo of Mallamo-Janski and Zlotowski overtook Li and Selby midway through and pulled out a 10-5 win at No. 2 doubles to seal the team victory.
And that became the trend the rest of the way through.
Shastas Kakarlapudi and Lawhon cruised past Woodward and Ohler 10-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Enterprises McGalliard and McMahon were leading Chandramouli and Gutierrez 7-6 in No. 1 doubles but the Wolves capitalized on a few Hornet errors and rallied to an 8-7 advantage and eventually took the match 10-8.
We need to work on our doubles and be more precise with our shots, Enterprise coach Dale McMahon said. There wasnt very much room for error with either team but Shastas the deepest team in the league.
Now because of the wet weather the past week, Shasta has a busy schedule ahead and will play four matches this week starting with Las Plumas today.
Enterprise travels to Chico today in hopes of rebounding from Mondays loss.
Were really going to know a lot about our potential for our season after Chico, Dale McMahon said.
