McComb board to consider ban on selling, giving away animals on public property

MCCOMB, Miss. The McComb Board of Selectmen is expected to consider next week a proposed ordinance prohibiting people from selling or giving pets away on public property.

City Administrator Quordiniah Lockley tells the Enterprise-Journal that the city consulted with St. Francis Animal Sanctuary in Tylertown to develop the changes. Lockley says St. Francis officials advised him that the changes will reduce the citys stray animal population.

At the same time, the board will consider a proposal to raise the local shelters adoption fee to $55 per animal for city residents and $50 for county residents. City residents are required to pay a $5 vaccination tag fee.

Officials say the price increase is intended to offset the costs of vaccinations and spaying or neutering of animals.

The Happy Priest: Jesus Encounters the Woman at the Well

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (Catholic Online) – God has created the human person for happiness. We will always be restless until we find it. However, the complete acquisition of happiness will only be fully realized in eternity.

The Samaritan woman in this Sundays gospel narrative exemplifies the search that everyone has embarked upon. She desires the peace and the happiness that the things of this world cannot provide.

First, the fact that the Samaritan woman is unhappy is evident from the gospel passage. She has been living a sinful life. Because of her sinful life, she does not draw water from the well located in her village. Instead, she journeys to another well that is located more than a half of a mile away. We can conclude from this fact that she was a social outcast.

Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband, and come here. The woman answered him, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You are right in saying, I have no husband; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly (John 4: 16-18).

Secondly, her profound unhappiness causes her to search for meaning and peace. The first encounter that the Samaritan woman has with the Lord deeply affects her. She is surprised that he even speaks with her. The Jews and the Samaritans did not speak to each other. Moreover, the rabbis of that time would not speak to women. Therefore, these two facts alone surprise her and begin an encounter that changes her life forever.

Jesus brilliantly uses the circumstances of the well, the water and her quest as parts of a pedagogy that brings her along an intense personal encounter. Initially she relates to Jesus strictly on a human level. After addressing him a number of times by calling him sir, her mind and heart begin to open and she realizes that he is a prophet. At this point, she moves on to even a deeper level. Her soul opens up to the reality that Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am he (John 4: 26).

It is interesting to observe how the Samaritan woman becomes a true apostle once she encounters the Lord Jesus for who he truly is. Here, like in other parts of the gospels, we see that the true disciple of the Lord will always be a passionate apostle.

Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the womans testimony, He told me all that I ever did. So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world (John 4: 39-42).

Lent provides us a special time to examine our lives. We are all called to conversion. Conversion is a continual process. We are always in need of change. Without a doubt, Lent is the most demanding time of the year for the true disciple of Christ. Lent provides us an opportunity not only to intensify our spiritual practices, but this penitential season also gives us a unique opportunity to reflect deeply on the progress of our journey towards eternal life.

Lent is a time for seriously questioning ourselves about our relationship with God. We might ask whether there are any particular sins or attachments that might prove to be obstacles to our achieving eternal salvation. A serious Lent is not only like a spring-cleaning in which we cleanse our souls of the clutter that has been accumulating there, it is also a time when changes in the way we live our lives may be in order.

Every day we are faced with choices and challenges that affect our relationship with the Lord. It is not easy to be faithful. However, Gods grace makes discipleship not only possible; it also makes it an amazing adventure.

We must not be surprised that Christianity essentially implies a daily, personal struggle. Commitment and battle go hand in hand. We have to take very seriously the fact that our human nature is wounded by original sin. Discouragement is never an option for true disciples of Christ. Every day presents a new opportunity to begin again. Gods loving mercy is always available to us through the sacrament of Confession. It is precisely Gods loving willingness to forgive our sins that fills us with the hope of eternal life.

There is an interesting story about a small group of college students that lived in Spain many years ago. Unfortunately, they were known for their very sinful lives. One day, one of the girls of the group was killed in a tragic car accident. Naturally, even though her friends no longer …

Shasta nets tennis win over Enterprise

Its clear that if the Hornets are going to make a run at a boys tennis Eastern Athletic League championship, they will have to go through defending EAL champs Shasta to get there.

The two crosstown rivals met Monday, and although Enterprise notched victories in the top two singles, the Wolves were too strong, handing the Hornets a 7-2 home loss.

With a solid one-two singles punch in seniors Chris McGalliard and Zach McMahon, Enterprise (4-1) needed a couple of unexpected wins to fall into their lap to continue its perfect season and get an early leg up on Shasta (2-0).

But the Wolves flexed their muscles and swept the remaining seven matches to cruise to a win.

I didnt really know what to expect coming in but I know we cant take anything for granted out here, said first-year Shasta coach Todd Campbell said. Our depth and experience helped a lot and that was probably the difference.

Enterprise got a quick win to start the day when McGalliard knocked off Shastas Aneesh Chandramouli 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

The victory was big for the Hornets but more of an accomplishment for McGalliard, who couldnt finish his last match against Chandramouli in last years Northern Section singles semifinal because of an ankle injury after winning the first set.

This was a big way to set the tone for the season, McGalliard said. I just need to start attacking more.

At No. 2 singles, McMahon found himself in a hole after dropping the first set 6-7(3) to Shastas Jacob Zlotowski. But he regained his composure and finished strong with his forehand to put Zlotowski away 6-3, 6-4 in the final two sets.

After that, the Wolves didnt have much resistance through the middle singles matches. Shasta senior Gabe Gutierrez shutout Enterprises Trevor Woodward 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles while Wolves sophomore Chad Mallamo-Janski defeated Hornets Tim Li 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Shastas Alex Lawhon beat Enterprises Zach Selby 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.

However, the Hornets had a chance to go into the doubles matches even at 3-apiece when Colton Ohler won the first set 6-1 No. 6 singles. But Ohler couldnt finish out the momentum and lost to Shastas Sundeep Kakarlapudi 6-4, 6-2 in the second and third sets.

We really needed that win and it was a close one, Campbell said. That was big for us to go into doubles at 4-2.

Meanwhile, Enterprise didnt go away without a fight. The Hornets took early leads in all three doubles matches and the possibility of a doubles sweep to take a win seemed plausible.

But the Wolves duo of Mallamo-Janski and Zlotowski overtook Li and Selby midway through and pulled out a 10-5 win at No. 2 doubles to seal the team victory.

And that became the trend the rest of the way through.

Shastas Kakarlapudi and Lawhon cruised past Woodward and Ohler 10-4 at No. 3 doubles.

Enterprises McGalliard and McMahon were leading Chandramouli and Gutierrez 7-6 in No. 1 doubles but the Wolves capitalized on a few Hornet errors and rallied to an 8-7 advantage and eventually took the match 10-8.

We need to work on our doubles and be more precise with our shots, Enterprise coach Dale McMahon said. There wasnt very much room for error with either team but Shastas the deepest team in the league.

Now because of the wet weather the past week, Shasta has a busy schedule ahead and will play four matches this week starting with Las Plumas today.

Enterprise travels to Chico today in hopes of rebounding from Mondays loss.

Were really going to know a lot about our potential for our season after Chico, Dale McMahon said.

Lil Wayne is Back from ‘Vacation’

Rapper Lil Wayne is back from his vacation, as he is calling it, on Rikers Island and performing in his Im Still Music Tour.

He came out of jail November 4, 2010 with a new name: Lil Tunechi. He said his grandmother named him Lil Tune, and he added the chi so it would rhyme with Gucci. He may have a new name, but its almost like he never left. He packed the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on Sunday night, a feat no one else of his generation can do except Kanye West.

Hes released two dozen songs since he left prison, which is a low amount for him, mostly on other artists records. He seems to be taking things a little slower, perhaps stopping to smell the roses along the way. Jail has a way of making a person appreciate what they have.

Lil Wayne, aka Lil Tunechi, has written a few songs, but only one, 6 Foot 7 Foot, was a hit. He is writing about his legal troubles with lines such as Im on probation/So my nerves bad, and They say it costs to be the boss/I paid the price, including tax.

It doesnt matter if he has nothing new to add to his sold-out concert performances. His celebrity alone is bringing out his fans. They waited eight months for him to be released, so they are more than ready for him. He seems to be completely sober, which is a condition of his probation, giving him added energy in his performances, no doubt impressing his audience.

Lil Wayne is set to release his ninth album in May, Tha Carter IV.

"Enterprise Zone" explored for Rockford development project

By John Folz-Donahue

ROCKFORD (WREX) – The City of Rockford continues its commitment to get a development at the corner of West State Street and Springfield Avenue.

Rockfords Planning and Development Committee approved the first step towards designating the entire area known as Renaissance Corners as an Enterprise Zone. If the designation sticks, a developer will be able to get the sales tax they pay on building materials back from the State of Illinois. For this project that could mean close to $2 million. The developer is still hoping to create a medical campus that includes a brain trauma rehabilitation center

Save Money For Summer Vacation with 3 Money Tricks

It’s almost April, which means showers, May flowers and before you know it summertime!

Your sights are set on your travel destination and you’ve saved up vacation days at work, but do you have a financial plan to fund your vacation? (Hopefully one that doesn’t end up leaving your post-vacation credit card bill looking like your post-holiday season bill. )

Here are 3 tricks to realistically save up the money needed to get you from Point A to Point Paradise by the time summer rolls around.

1. Set It Up.

Right now, set up a separate savings account for your vacation fund so you don’t end up dipping into a savings account, borrowing from an emergency fund, or relying on credit cards. Determine how much you need to save (know what you’re shooting for) and set up the savings account (to measure your progress). SmartyPig is a nifty online banking site that allows you to customize separate accounts with a name and savings amount, plus you can view your progress towards your goal and share it with people; but any savings account will do. Calculate a reasonable amount to automatically pull from each paycheck and set up automatic deposits. Like the satisfaction of hearing coins jingle in a piggybank, you need something tangible to commit to.

2. Fund It.

If you don’t have wiggle room in your budget to fund your vacation, use a “pay yourself first” savings strategy. First, figure out the non-essential items in your current budget outside of rent or mortgage payments, utilities, loans, and other necessary expenditures. Second, pick out spending habits you can ditch, and calculate how much you could save towards your vacation instead. For example, you could:

  • Ditch your daily latte fix , save $155 a month, and have $465 saved by July. That equals a plane ticket or weekend hotel stay.
  • Cut out weekly dinner and drinks, save $240 a month, and have $720 saved by July. That equals a 3-day cruise or big road trip.

These are estimates, but the idea here is to target ways to save big by starting small. Nominate which spending habits you could sacrifice for a while.  Finally, instead of treating yourself to these luxuries, pay yourself first– straight into your savings account. Piggymojo, which encourages you to turn impulse purchases into bank deposits, is another cool, mobile tool perfect for this step.

3. Keep It Up

Diets often fail because we lose sight of the finish line, and suddenly it’s easier to trip up on the next donut that comes along. So keep your eye on the prize and give yourself reminders of why you are cutting your budget. Make your smartphone’s homescreen and computer desktop a picture of your vacation spot, check your savings goal every other day to see your money grow, and mark down on a calendar how many days till vacation. Do whatever it takes to make your plans as realistic and attainable as possible, so you can visualize the concept of saving money as bringing you one step closer to the reality of your summer vacation.

Bottom Line.

The more you plan out real savings steps, the closer you are to funding your summer vacation in a savvy way without ruining your savings or credit health. It’s the 3-steps- and-3 months-till-summer challenge– get your piggybank set and your vacation bags packed!

Gov. Scott a traveling salesman for state

Jobs Florida ? Scotts new department of commerce ? would have four divisions beneath it. Those divisions would address accounting, community development, business development and strategic planning.

A new position, Jobs Florida commissioner, would report directly to Scott ? the governor has said the commissioners physical office will be two doors down from his own in the Capitol. The commissioner would contract with the states array of public-private partnerships that include Enterprise Florida, Space Florida, Visit Florida and the Florida Sports Foundation.

The draft bill eliminates the Department of Community Affairs and the Agency for Workforce Innovation as they now exist. It moves functions that arent focused on job creation ? emergency management and early learning, for instance ? elsewhere.

The restructuring is estimated to save more than $8 million a year.

Scott is already acting on his vision.

In February, Scott engineered the hiring of Gray Swoope as president of Enterprise Florida, sweeping out the old leadership of the states chief business-attraction arm. Swoope starts Monday. He previously worked in Mississippi in the same job for Gov. Haley Barbour.

Gaetz said the aim is to increase efficiency and address interagency malfunctions that have led to complaints about obstructionist bureaucracy.

Economic development officials around the state want it to work.

We have had challenges with the timeliness of decisions from the Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development, said Cindy Anderson, executive director of TEAM Santa Rosa, the economic-development agency in the Panhandle county.

The Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development is within the governors office and works with Enterprise Florida to put together incentive packages and sign off on eligibility criteria for prospective job-creating companies.

I hope (a new state structure) would be quicker and more positive: Heres how well get the job done. We dont want to hear any more, The problem is this, the obstacle is that.
