Black Entertainment Television to air exclusive Herman Cain documentary

Black Entertainment Television will air exclusive interviews with former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain, in what the network calls “a deeper characterization of one of the most controversial black political figures in contemporary America.”

Entertainment gadgets that don’t break the bank

Being able to get the latest and greatest in entertainment at the click of a button is becoming more popular than ever. Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu are becoming as ubiquitous as milk and cookies.

As these services become more popular, theres a call to consolidate all of these services in one place so there arent a hundred devices plugged into your TV.

Roku is one of the first devices to do this. There are four version of the Roku box on the market right now, with prices starting at $50.

The Roku LT ($50) and the Roku 2 HD ($60) both stream in 720p. They offer more than 350 channels of streaming content, including Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu and many others. The Roku 2 XD ($80) and Roku 2 XS ($100) stream in 1080p.

Its main competition is the Apple TV. At $100, you can stream everything you bought or rented from the iTunes Store. It also streams Netflix, NHL, NBA, MLB content, YouTube and many other things (except Amazon Prime). There are rumors about Apple releasing a new generation of Apple TV devices, or even an entire Television set next year. Until that happens, we have the current version of the Apple TV.

But some people still like having physical media, and when it comes to image quality you cant beat Blu Ray.

It wasnt that long ago when it seemed like you needed to get a loan from the bank and sell a body part on the Chinese black market to afford a Blu Ray player. The prices have come down and the things they can do went up.

For less than $200, you can get players that will play your discs and stream media over the internet.

The Toshiba BDX5200 costs between $130 and $200, it streams Netflix, Pandora, and YouTube, but its a little slower than other players.

For around the same price, the Panasonic DMP-BDT210 can stream those channels, plus Amazon, and you can access your Twitter feed. If you have the proper accessories, you can even make calls through Skype.

Sony designed the NSZ-GT1 (Google TV) to have access to the Android Marketplace so you can choose which streaming services you want. This player can cost up to $300 though, which might be too much for some customers.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘New Year’s Eve’ is calculated countdown to mild entertainment

Those who dont like crowds might take caution with New Years
Eve. There are bunches of people in the Times Square sequences,
and perhaps even more in the main cast of characters. For those who
enjoy mass companionship, this movie may be your
sort-of-overflowing punch bowl.

New Years Eve follows the same conceit as the reasonably
popular film Valentines Day a few years ago, and is made by the
same creative team. Gather a roster of Hollywood A-listers (some of
them are B-pluses), then merge them into multiple storylines
surrounding an occasion rife with potential strife, melancholy,
nostalgia and glimmers of hope and optimism. Its a soup thats too
busy with ingredients, but New Years Eve isnt too concerned
with creative precision beyond the bouncy-pouncy score that
accompanies and often overinterprets its characters stock dialogue
and forced emotions.

Then again, there are no presumably great expectations for
audiences using New Years Eve as a brief, mostly mindless escape
from the holiday rush. The film is what its happy to be —- a
breezy carousel of mid-level entertainment.

There are too many mini-storylines to list in New Years Eve,
but here are a few: The new boss (Hilary Swank) of the Times Square
festivities is afraid of heights, and her dropping ball wont drop.
(That isnt code, it really wont). A dying man (Robert DeNiro)
wants to see the downtown festivities from atop the hospital roof.
Perhaps his kind nurse (Halle Berry) can help. A lonely
music-industry secretary (Michelle Pfeiffer) is given a whirlwind
tour of NYC by a hyperactive bicycle messenger (Zac Efron). A
harried mom (Sarah Jessica Parker) cant stop her 15-year-old
daughter from experiencing her first New Years Eve with friends.
Two couples race to deliver the first baby of the new year. A
comic-book illustrator (Ashton Kutcher) finds himself trapped in an
elevator with a rock-music groupie. A rock-music star (Jon Bon
Jovi) hopes to make amends with a recent former love (Katherine
Heigl).

There are more, but it might take until the following New Years
Eve to list all the particulars. As directed by Garry Marshall, who
directed Valentines Day, the mini-stories are given brisk,
superficial treatment, but with just enough syrup and skill to tug
the hearts of willing viewers.

All said, New Years Eve succeeds because it delivers as
scheduled, even if the goods are lacking. If your resolution is to
cut back on this sort of simple fare, this isnt such a bad last
hurrah, and its hangover effects likely minimal. Bring some sort
of romance scorecard, though.

Rita Hayworths grandson found dead in NYC

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (UPI) — Film star Rita Hayworths grandson, who had a history of drug abuse and suicide attempts, has been found dead in his New York apartment.

Andrew Embiricos was a 25-year-old sales executive for Virgin Atlantic Airways, who earned a degree in psychology at Fordham University and founded a Facebook charity group that provides clothing to homeless people. The son of Hayworths philanthropist daughter, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, he also was an active member of HIV/AIDS advocacy groups and the Alzheimers Association.

Embiricos was discovered Sunday night lying on his bed with a plastic bag over his head by a friend who was worried because he missed several appointments and went to his Manhattan apartment to check on him, sources told the New York Daily News.

The newspaper said officials are calling the preliminary cause of death an apparent suicide, but an autopsy is being conducted to determine the definitive cause.

Village Voice gossip columnist Michael Musto remembered Embiricos in his blog as a strikingly handsome, personable guy who radiated charm. Musto also said he had been battling HIV, had spent time in drug rehab and had attempted suicide in the past.

Hayworth suffered from Alzheimers disease before she died in 1987 at age 68. Her film credits include Only Angels Have Wings, The Lady from Shanghai, Strawberry Blonde, Cover Girl, Gilda, Pal Joey and The Wrath of God.
