Henderson condemns drug law relaxation push

The Northern Territory Chief Minister says he will not allow drug laws to be relaxed while he is in charge.

A report by Australia21 argues the war on drugs has been lost and governments should consider decriminalising certain substances.

Former Northern Territory police commissioner Mick Palmer has backed the report.

But the Chief Minister Paul Henderson says theres no safe level of use when it comes to illicit substances.

I couldnt disagree more with any report, he said.

Anything that makes illicit drug use more accessible is not going to happen here in the Northern Territory.

And I make no apology for saying very clearly illicit substances are bad for your health, they are bad for the community, they are bad for society.

Mr Henderson says he knows people directly affected by drug addiction.

Somebody in my extended family has battled with drugs all their life, he said.

It has certainly destroyed his life, it has been very difficult on my family.

I think its the worst of all possible signals that we can send his children.

The Country Liberals have also voiced their opposition to the Australia21 report, saying they will take a tough stance on drugs should they be elected in August.

If you go to remote communities now, youll find those drugs in those remote communities, in spite of all the press releases from Government on how theyre fighting drugs in remote communities, the Oppositions justice spokesman John Elferink says.

Millions of People can now have Stress Relief with Relaxation Music

Everyone can now have relief from stress with the use of relaxation music. Enhanced Healing is now introducing Dr. Harry Henshaws therapuetic relaxation music to the public, to help anyone who needs to reduce the stress of their daily life. Originally developed in a clinical setting, Dr. Henshaws relaxation music is now available to anyone who wants to experience deep relaxation and as a result reduce their stress.

(PRWEB) April 03, 2012

Stress has been linked to many serious and devastating problems that affect us individually and as a society. The serious consequences of stress can be psychological, physical, behavioral and vocational in nature. For example, some of the psychological consequences of stress are anxiety, boredom, low self esteem, forgetfulness, depression, anger, apathy and worry.

Some physical consequences of stress are headaches, diabetes, fatigue, chest and back pain, hypertension and ulcers. Behavioral consequences of stress can be overeating, loss of appetite, smoking, insomnia, alcohol and drug abuse, sleep problems, emotional outbursts and violence and aggression. Some vocational or work related consequences of stress are absenteeism, accident, reduced productivity, job turnover, poor work relations and low morale.

Enhanced Healing is now introducing Dr. Henshaws relaxation music to the public as an effective, efficient and safe solution for stress relief. Dr. Henshaws relaxation music was originally created from his practice of hypnosis and hypnotherapy and has been used in a variety of mental health, substance abuse and military settings through out the country and world for stress relief and stress management.

While his relaxation music, meditation music and sleep music has been very effective in clinically oriented settings, Dr. Henshaw believes that his musics best application is to the general public, to everyone who needs assistance in reducing and managing the stress of daily life. Dr. Henshaw believes that if a person can learn how to experience a relaxed state and on a more consistent basis throughout the week that he will nessarily reduce the harmful consequences that stress could have in his life.

Dr. Henshsaw believes further that it is the design of his relaxation music that causes the beneficial effect for the listener. First, there is the structure of the musical composition. Dr. Henshaw believes that having long, sustained chords or voices, approximately 12 to 15 seconds in duration, with slow transitions between the chords works best. Such a structure causes the body and mind to slow down and begin to relax and as and eventually attain a deep state of relaxation.

The second component of his relaxation music is the binaural audio tones that have been mixed into the music. The binaural beats or tones, through a process referred to as “entrainment” or “frequency following,” gently directs the body to make more of the brain wave frequencies necessary for either deep relaxation or sleep. The recordings for deep relaxation contain binaural audio tones within the theta range while the recordings for sleep contains binaural audio tones within the delta range.

Listening to Dr. Henshaws relaxation music helps to relieve stress almost immediately. With the repeated, continuous use of Dr. Henshaws relaxation music he believes that the beneficial effects can be profound and are cumulative over time. As research indicates, some of the measurable effects on the body of using relaxation music are lowering blood pressure, regulating heart rate and breathing. Some of the psychological effects of using relaxation music are feeling calmer and serene, more peaceful and much more at ease.

Dr. Henshaw earned his doctoral degree in Human Development and Counseling from Boston University. Dr. Henshaw currently works in a Drug Rehab program in the Miami area and has a private counseling practice. In addition to his counseling education and experience, Dr. Henshaw is also a musician with 11 years of piano training.

Anit-smoking ads getting results

A week after the health group released its graphic campaign ads, twice as many people have called a toll-free number that helps smokers quit.

Its making 24-year-old Darius Williams, of Jacksonville, rethink the habit he used to think was cool. Williams started smoking Black and Mild cigars in high school.

Its more of a relaxation technique for me, but its a bad habit relaxation technique, I think, he said.

The CDC ads have captured his attention.

When you look on TV and you see a lady that has no hair on her head and she has a hole in her throat and shes saying this was all caused by smoking, it makes you think twice about some of the things youre doing, Williams said.

Pulmonologist Dr. Wendell Williams said the ads have even caught his eye.

I have literally stopped what Im doing and looked not only because Im interested in trying to prevent smoking, but also because theyre telling the truth. Theyre telling exactly what happens to people, he said. The pain and suffering, the misery that comes in life not only to the person with the disease but to their entire family.

Wendell Williams said about 3,000 teens try cigarettes every day in this region of the country alone.

Tobacco is probably the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, he said.

He said parents need to warn their children of the dangers before they pick up the habit.

When you get used to doing something on a daily basis, it can definitely be a hard thing to stop doing, but its all about willpower, Darius Williams said.

He wants to break his bad habit before its too late. The ads were his wake-up call.

They need to know about these things immediately, and this information should definitely be exposed to everybody, Darius Williams said.

Stress Management Can Be Taught Online

In a small study, researchers have shown that meditation and stress management techniques can be taught using an online virtual community.

Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MHG) believe the use of a virtual environment to teach mind/body relaxation techniques can improve access for a variety of individuals including those in rural communities and among people with physical mobility problems.

Our finding that a medical intervention – in this case teaching a mind/body approach that includes the relaxation response – can be delivered via a virtual environment is important because these environments are richer and more rewarding than simply using interactive web sites, said Daniel Hoch, MD, PhD, corresponding author of the report in the open-access journal PLoS One.

Hoch explains that, while practices that elicit the relaxation response have been shown to benefit individuals with a wide variety of health problems, the traditional way of teaching these practices – face-to-face meetings over several weeks – can present significant difficulties for patients, particularly those with limited mobility.

Furthermore, individuals who are uncomfortable with group programs may prefer the anonymity of a virtual educational setting.

While Internet-based programs have been used for mental health screening and support programs, Hoch and his colleagues were not aware of any prior efforts to systematically study a virtual mind-body intervention.

Investigators used Second Life, a three-dimensional virtual world in which users interact by means of online avatars that can communicate basic body language and emotional states.

Second Life is being used by many patient support groups for individuals with neurologic disorders. The virtual community is being used to share information and experiences.

Because learning to use Second Life can be challenging, the study only enrolled healthy individuals who had experience in the virtual environment.

Participants enrolled in groups of up to 10 individuals and participated in twice-weekly virtual meetings led by an experienced clinician. The clinician taught different methods of eliciting the relaxation response, guided participants through their practice, answered questions and discussed the participants experiences.

Group members were asked to elicit the relaxation response for at least 20 minutes each day – either in front of the computer with their avatar in the Second Life virtual teaching area or in another quiet setting – and received audio and video files and other supporting information.

Before and after the eight weeks of online sessions, participants completed standard questionnaires assessing stress and other psychological symptoms.

The full study was completed by 24 individuals in three groups, all receiving the same training program. Although the small size of the study made it difficult to arrive at statistically significant results, overall participants showed reductions in depression- and anxiety-related symptoms.

They also reported being very satisfied with the virtual environment, and several commented that they could not have taken part without the online option. Although most admitted that a face-to-face teaching environment would be even better, they also noted that the time required to travel to in-person meetings would have presented difficulties.

Several participants have let us know, several months later, that they continue to use techniques they learned in these sessions to reduce stress in their everyday lives, Hoch said.

The Second Life technology is changing rapidly and its creators have scaled back their interest in educational and clinical activities, so were now hoping to explore the ability to have secure patient interactions in web-browser-based environments. One of the applications that I feel holds a great deal of promise is using this approach to help patients with post-traumatic stress, so Im hopeful well have the opportunity to try that in the near future.

Social networks and online communities represent an important element of support, information and motivation for many patients, said Joseph Kvedar, MD, a co-author of the PLoS One report.

Connected health strategies are creating new opportunities to deliver quality care, for patients and providers to communicate effectively and help motivate and educate patients to stay on track with their treatment plan.

British MPs reject relaxation of assisted suicide laws

British MPs have backed the Director of Public Prosecutions over his guidance on assisted suicide but rejected proposals to change the law.

The motion put forward by Conservative Richard Ottaway called welcomed the 2010 guidance and called for a government consultation on whether to put it on a statutory basis.

After a five-hour debate in which MPs from both sides made impassioned appeals, MPs gave their backing to the DPP’s guidance but refused to support any moves to relax the law on assisted suicide.

Mr Ottaway argued that courts should not “have the last word” on assisted suicide, but rather Parliament, as representatives of the public.

He said that the law at present does not distinguish between a malicious person encouraging a suicidal person and “the loving spouse who lovingly fulfils a partner’s request”.

The DPP’s guidance – which identified motive and public interest as the main factors in deciding whether to prosecute someone who helped another to die – was “realistic and compassionate”, he said.

Fiona Bruce MP’s amendment calling for better palliative care was supported by more than a hundred MPs.

“We are absolutely delighted that the House has sent such a clear message that improving specialist palliative and hospice care is a priority and that assisted suicide is not the route we wish to take as a society,” she said.

Labour’s Frank Field said the debate was really about euthanasia.

“Somehow we think this country is populated by all these husbands who love their wives and wives who love their husbands … all gathering around doing the right thing.

I also see a very nasty side sometimes about life and I know perfectly well that in those circumstances those individuals would have no hesitation in trying to persuade people [what] the decent thing to do is – end their lives.

Therese Coffey MP added: “It was a mature debate but certainly clear that there was no appetite of the majority of the House to change the law as it stands today.”
