Ready for vacation yet? Lots to do in the Tri-Cities

OK, the kids still have a month of school left but its not too soon to be planning fun summer activities for the young ones (and the not so young ones).

Luckily, we live in an area where there is lots to do. Here are just a few of the things were grateful to have in our community — many of them educational, but dont tell the kids.

A mammoth project

Lets face it, kids of all ages love prehistoric creatures. Its cool to see the bones of extinct monsters on display and all put together. Somehow seeing them still in the dirt makes an even stronger connection between the museum display and where those bones came from.

So were grateful that visiting a working scientific dig now is as close as Kennewick. Guided public tours of the site are scheduled one day a month. Call Donna Van Beek at 509-989-1449 to make arrangements.

Tri-Cities Geocoin Challenge

Kennewick, Pasco and Richland are working together to sponsor a high-tech treasure hunt. Be honest. Doesnt that call to the kid in you?

Youll need a handheld GPS and to open a free account at geocaching.com.

On Jun 22-24, 30 new geocaches will be listed on the internet (10 in each city). Visit all 30 locations and you get a cool coin — if youre one of the first 900 people to finish.

Visit just one or two and youll probably see one or two cool things that you have overlooked in our three cities.

Now that the asparagus has started, cherries wont be far behind. From then on its a new food just about every week.

Cinco de Mayo

Normally this would be a great place to encourage people to visit Pascos Cinco de Mayo celebration. This year, however, the event was canceled because of a lack of volunteers.

We have to say we are feeling a void in the calendar this year. The annual event is the starting signal for summer and its one more way for Mid-Columbians to share in other cultures.

We understand that volunteers get burned out. So thanks to those people who kept the event going for so long. Maybe well see it rise again next year.

We know that most of the events we celebrate in the Mid-Columbia rely heavily on volunteers. By and large we are a busy, giving, caring community. For that we are still grateful.

Yes, You Can Afford A Summer Vacation This Year

NORWALK, Conn., May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –
Go ahead, give that staycation the boot. Even with higher airfares and hotel rates expected this summer, it is possible – with a little looking – to find an affordable summer vacation, according to priceline.com’s

/quotes/zigman/90481/quotes/nls/pcln PCLN
-1.82%

Travel Ekspert Brian Ek.

The national average airfare for summer travel (June 1 – August 31, 2012) is $378, which is 2% higher than last year, according to priceline.com’s own statistics. Airfares are being driven by a combination of high fuel costs and reduced capacity, as many airlines have cut the number of seats flown. For hotels, STR (Smith Travel Research) recently reported that average hotel occupancy was 65.5% for the week of April 15th, while the average daily room rate increased 7.8% to $106.66. If these trends continue, leisure travelers may see a combination of high rates and no vacancies in high-demand markets.

“Average fares and rates may be up, but there are exceptions where leisure travelers can still find bargains this summer,” said Ek. “The key is finding a destination where all components of your trip – airfare, hotel, and rental car – are attractively priced so that an expensive hotel rate, for example, doesn’t cancel out your airfare savings.”

Flexible travelers will find they can increase their travel savings by trying priceline.com’s Name Your Own Price® airline, hotel and rental car services, where consumers bid and then receive their itineraries if their bids are accepted by travel suppliers. By bidding, consumers can save up to 60% on hotel rooms, up to 40% on airline tickets and up to 40% on rental cars compared to published rates and fares. “Even with higher hotel occupancy and fewer airline seats, there are rooms, seats and rental cars available for summer travel at these very attractive discounts,” added Ek.

Here are some of The Travel Ekspert’s recommendations for affordably priced summer vacations. Examples below were all shopped on
http://www.priceline.com on April 30 and May 1. Prices and availability are subject to change.

Chicago. This summer, the Windy City is a bargain traveler’s trifecta. The average summer airfare to O’Hare is $339 (down 4.4% vs. last year), while Midway is an even more affordable $305. Summer bidders using priceline.com’s Name Your Own Price® rental car service are having success with $16/day bids for compact cars and $15/day for economy. I found the Hotel 71, a 3.5 star hotel in downtown Chicago that rates 8.6 on our customers’ satisfaction scale, at $163/night for a June 23rd check-in (and you don’t pay for the reservation until your stay). Priceline.com also gives guests the option of paying for their reservations at the time of booking. And a two-night air & hotel vacation package, with round-trip airfare from St. Louis and accommodations at the 3-star Central Loop Hotel was $311.49 (July 14-16).

San Francisco. Summer airfares are down 3.4% to an average $402. I’m seeing Name Your Own Price® rental car customers having success with $19/day bids for compact cars and $18/day for economy, so the savings are north of 60% compared to published rates. Hotels are a little on the pricey side for the summer, although I found the 3-star Powell for $189/night for a June 23rd check-in. A 2-night air & hotel vacation package with round trip airfare from Los Angeles and accommodations at the 4-star Parc 55 Wyndham on Union Square was $344.84 per person (July 14 check-in).

Las Vegas. The government is still frowning on its employees jetting off to Las Vegas, and that’s good news for leisure travelers trying to score a cheap trip. Airfares to Las Vegas this summer have dropped 3.3% over last year, to an average $366. Rental car deals are impressive. I’m seeing Name Your Own Price® customers having success with bids as low as $12/day for an economy car and $13/day for a compact. Midweek is when you’ll save the most money. For check-in Tuesday, August 7, I found the 5-star Aria Resort & Casino had rooms for $119 a night. Bargain hunters may also like the 3-star Excalibur for $38 a night.

Florida. Summer airfares to Ft. Lauderdale are down 3.1% year over year, to $299 on average. West Palm Beach summer airfares are averaging $326, down 0.3%. Watch out for Miami – summer airfares there are up almost 5%. In Ft. Lauderdale, I’m seeing summer rental car customers using Name Your Own Price® having success with bids as low as $16 for an economy car and $17 for a compact, savings in both cases of more than 60%. Hotel rates are attractive. For example, priceline.com is showing the 4-star Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach Resort for $109 a night.

Take a cruise. The industry is aggressively courting cruisers, and the prices reflect it, down 5% to 12% compared to last year, with savings up to 75% off the published rates. Carnival is offering summer Caribbean cruises, departing from Miami, priced at $62 a night per person, and that includes stateroom, meals and entertainment. Norwegian has Bahamas cruises from Miami for as little as $42 a night per person, and they’re throwing in unlimited shore excursions for kids 2-12 when accompanied by a paying adult. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian are offering drastically reduced cruise & air pricing to Europe, as well as onboard perks like limited-time pre-paid gratuities, free onboard spending credits, spa offers and more. Priceline Cruises also is sweetening the deal with free hotel stays of up to 5 nights depending on length of cruise and stateroom selected.

New York City. Let’s see if we can pull a rabbit out of a hat. Actually, summer airfares into JFK are down 3.4% year over year, to $368 average, while Newark is down 1.4% to $367, and LaGuardia is up 2.3% to $308. Best deal on a rental car is in Newark, where Name Your Own Price® customers are having success with bids as low as $19 for an economy car, and $20 for a compact. As far as hotel, here’s the big money saver. Instead of booking in Manhattan at over $200 a night, try staying across the river in Jersey City and take public transportation into the city. For a July 20th check-in, I found the 4-star Westin Jersey City Newport, which gets an 8.9 out of 10 satisfaction rating from guests, for a very affordable $166 a night.

Now to answer some other questions:

Across the pond, or no? I searched all over Europe and had a tough time finding destinations where the airfare didn’t blow the budget, and that includes some of the PIIGS countries (Portugal, Ireland, Italy Greece & Spain). I was attracted to a 6-night Ireland package, July 14-21, for $1,254.62 per person, that included round trip airfare from New York and 6 nights at the Finston Country House Hotel, a charming 45-acre property located 10 miles from Dublin Airport. Also for those dates, I found a $1,379.28 per person Prague package that included airfare from New York and 6 nights at the 3-star Courtyard By Marriott Prague Flora, which scores 9 out of 10 with guests.

Whither Mexico. The good news is, priceline.com’s most popular Mexico tourist destinations, including Cancun, Cozumel, Mexico City and Cabo San Lucas, are not under a travel warning. And the deals are very interesting. For example, for the week of August 11-18, I found an $818.45 per person air & hotel package that included airfare from New York and 6 nights at the Gran Melia Cancun Resort. I also found an $83/night rate at the 3-star Coral Princess Hotel & Resort in Cozumel for a June 22nd check-in.

Vacation Planning Trips For The Budget Conscious

MINNEAPOLIS and ST. PAUL, Minn., May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –
American families take an average of 4.5 trips every year. This year, it might be harder to do that, since the most recent Travel Price Index rose 3.6 percent year over year. This is primarily a result of rising gas prices, but lodging is getting more expensive, as well.

“Summer road trips and holiday flights home to see family are part of the fabric of this country,” said Jim Sathre, Senior Vice President, M&I, a part of BMO Financial Group. “With a little advance planning and budgeting, families might not have to forgo their vacation traditions even though travel is more expensive.”

Sathre offers a few ways to make saving for vacation a little easier and more organized.

Have a plan in mind. If you know where you’re vacationing, when you want to go, and what types of activities you’ll participate in, then you’ll have a better idea of the trip’s cost, and you’ll be able to budget more effectively.

Be realistic about the funds you’ll need. When you arrive at the destination, will you be eating out at nice restaurants? Seeing shows or attending sporting events? And don’t forget to account for the souvenirs you’ll want to pick up. Once you have a set budget, stick to it and avoid overspending while vacationing.

Set a monthly savings goal. Based on your trip budget and the amount of time before the vacation, determine how much you’ll need to save every month to build up your trip fund. If you’re travelling abroad or going somewhere with high food and lodging costs, this figure might be pretty high. If it’s so high that saving is unrealistic, consider rescheduling the trip for a later date.

Use your planning as a teaching opportunity and talk to your kids about saving, budgeting and spending. If your kids are old enough, engage them in the process and set a goal for them to save a small amount to contribute to the experience.

Start saving. It’s never too early to start saving for travel – especially if you make frequent trips or travel far. Some people prefer a big jar on the kitchen counter, while others will open a new savings account, or utilize short-term investment channels. Either way, pick a method that works for you. And don’t be embarrassed to ask for help – family or friends might have creative ideas to help, and financial and banking professionals can advise you on how to meet your goals.

“Vacations and spending time with family and friends create life-long memories. Planning, control and consistency are key, whether the goal is a vacation or a new car,” added Sathre.

Moon Dance Vacation Rentals and Sakinaw Lake Lodge Announce Partnership

New combined accommodation package based on ecological diversity on the Sunshine Coast.

Pender Harbour British Columbia (PRWEB) May 03, 2012

Moon Dance Vacation Rentals and Sakinaw Lake Lodge today announced their partnership in offering a combined accommodation getaway for shoulder seasons on BCs Sunshine Coast, bringing guests into two unique marine environments over a 4 night stay.

Moon Dance Cabin amp; Perch are located on the hillside of Oyster Bay, a long reach extending in from Pender Harbour. These tidal flats dry at low tide, and became known as Oyster Bay when a Vancouver doctor introduced a small type of oyster from Japan into the basin. There is still an operational oyster farm in the area. Visitors enjoy the two-in-one environments in this protected area. Every 6 hours a tidal change (alternating high and low tides, 4 in a 24 hour period) brings new shorebirds and wildlife. The architecturally designed Perch is located higher on the hillside and frames views of almost the entire bay and is often booked heavily in fall and spring storm seasons. The more traditional cabin is located close to the water for an up-close vantage point for all of the senses – low tide offers the visitor a unique scent-based insight into coastal living.

In contrast, Sakinaw Lake Lodge offers a uniquely Sunshine Coast lakefront experience – the lake is actually stratified into two types of water. Freshwater, which is lighter and warmer, sits on top; at approximately 98 feet it turns to saltwater, telling the geological story of when Sakinaw was an inlet still connected to the Pacific Ocean. The 1,695-acre lake was dammed in the early 1900s, and still has an active salmon fishway for a fin-fish variety that includes cutthroat trout, coho, sockeye and land-locked kokanee salmon. Sakinaw Lake also plays a significant role in First Nations history of the region, with shell middens and pictographs in the area. It remains in the territory of the Sechelt First Nations – the Shishalh People – today.

Access to Moon Dance Vacation rentals is via the scenic Hwy. 101 which continues on through to end at the terminus in Lund north of Powell River (connected via a second ferry from Earls Cove to Saltery Bay), and this portion of the stay is independent and self-guided and close to the Iris Griffiths Field Interpretive Centre and the Skookumchuck Rapids tidal viewing hike. Guests also receive Artist Studio Gift Certificates; the owners of Moon Dance are art collectors and enjoy introducing guests to the proportionally extraordinary range of artists on the Sunshine Coast.

Sakinaw Lake Lodge offers a choice of accommodations from a top-level of the lakefront lodge, or the level floor, or guests may opt for a luxurious and more private tenthouse just around the point. The lodge is water access only, and the owners are the on-call chauffeurs for guests with a comfortable, flat-level on/off pontoon boat, and also take guests on a 3 hour luxury excursion exploring the lakes rich and storied history. Breakfasts at the Lodge are full-course specialties served in your accommodation or on the lakeside outdoor kitchen patio.

This partnered package is only available in the months of March-June and September/October and is based on double occupancy. The $890 getaway is $210 off normal rates.

For Your Next Vacation, Book a Night In One of These Lovely Shipping Containers

Lately, a lot of energy has been put into coming up with unconventional ways to use shipping containers. Funny, that. The latest comes from a British company called Snoozebox whose modular, portable, two-tier hotel can be set up in just 48-hours.

Snoozeboxs climate-controlled rooms feature a double bed, bathroom, flat screen TV, free Wi-Fi, two power outlets, a safe, and key card entry and maid service and a continental breakfast are complimentary with your stay. There are four rooms to a container (has such a sentence been written ever before?) and the hotelwhich brings with it its own staffcan be configured in arrangements of anywhere between 40 and 400 rooms.

Snoozebox suggests its ideal clients could be music festival organizers, race-car teams, or overbooked hotels who dont want to lose a few hundred customers to the competition. All mostly solid scenariosexcept why would you stay in 1/4th of a shipping container when there are undoubtedly other hotels that arent overbooked? Where are we talking about, here? I want to understand their logic, I do… [GizMag]
